Comprehensive Ophthalmology

The Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute provides state-of-the art primary medical eye care. Our academic physicians are medical school faculty members who expertly screen for eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, for medical diseases involving the eye, like diabetes and high blood pressure, and for side effects of medication on vision and the eye. They specialize in solving complex diagnostic dilemmas, and managing difficult cases, where standard therapy has failed.

In cases where specialized surgical care is required from one or more of our subspecialists, our Comprehensive Ophthalmologists are best qualified to determine the best referrals for the specific needs of the patient, and are able to expedite appointments. They are also able to more effectively coordinate necessary medical care, with their close collaborations with UC Irvine Healthcare’s primary care and emergency services.

In addition, all three of our comprehensive ophthalmologists are providers in the Vision Service Plan for employees and retirees of UC Irvine Medical Center and the UC Irvine campus. This plan, separate from the patient’s health plan, allows an annual examination for glasses with a screening examination for medical diseases of the eye. Although many optometrists are also VSP providers, our ophthalmologists, in addition to be able to expertly prescribe glasses, draw from their uniquely broad perspectives and medical training to diagnose medical problems of the eye or physical problems evident by changes in the eyes, that are often missed and need to be addressed. In situations where patients have medical care based elsewhere, our physicians can alert the patient’s insurance provider of the problem. Patients interested in VSP care from our providers must bring their glasses (even if the frame is broken) to the visit. Patients desiring contact lenses for the first time, hard contact lenses, or requiring a re-fitting of a new type of contact lens would need to see an optometrist. However, soft contact lens wearers desiring an update of the strength in their prescription must have the lenses with them, along with the boxes or the prescription for the strength and lens specifications. Our physicians look forward to providing the highest level of medical care for your eyes.
